Kusadasi is surrounded by many worth seeing places. To begin with, there is a natural beauty 30km from Kusadasi, National Park which is the ideal place to escape from the town fuss and noise. The park is located in the Dilek Peninsula, south of Kusadasi and can be reached by minibuses from Kusadasi.
Kusadasi is 30km away from another beauty, Sirince, which comes from the Turkish word "sirin" meaning pretty. It is an old orthodox village which is a perfect synthesis of Turk-Greek culture. The village was left by the Greeks according to the exchange agreement between the Greeks and the Turks in 1920 after the Independence War.
One more natural beauty, Pamukkale, is 220km to Kusadasi and can be visited with tours provided by travel agencies. It is an unusual natural and historical site (Hierapolis) with the sparkling white castle like cascades, one of the most important highlights of Turkey and unique in the world. Hierapolis was established by King Eumenes 2 and was given the name of Hiera in the honour of the wife of Telephos, the legendary established of the ancient Pergamum.
One of the main reason of Kusadasi visitors, to stay in Kusadasi is Ephesus. The ancient city is world famous for having one of the seven wonders of the world in its borders, The Temple of Artemision. Ephesus is 20km to Kusadasi. The city used to be the most important commercial centre of the western Anatolia. The house of Virgin Mary is located on Bulbul mountain, 9km ahead of Ephesus. The shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. It is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in the region around Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill. Three hundred years after the death of Saint Paul, a small chapel was constructed over the grave in the 4th century. The church was changed into a marvelous basilica during the region of Emperor Justinian (527 -565 AD).
Didyma is 75km to Kusadasi, famous with the temple for its oracles. The temple dedicated to Apollo was the richest and the biggest of the Ionian temples on Anatolian soil. Priene, which can be visited on the way to Didyma, is thought to have a pre-Greek origin. Priene is about 35 km from Kusadasi is worth being visited for its Athena Temple, located on the highest point of the city, the Stadion, the Prytanion, the Temple of Demeter and Persephone, the Bouloterion, the Gymnasium and the Amphitheater. Miletos is also on the way to Didyma, 60km from Kusadasi. The city was on the point where the Buyuk Menderes ("Meander") flew into the Aegean Sea. Because of the alluviums, Miletos has been remote several times from sea, which explains that one can see today different harbors.
